Vancouver to Hope
(On Highway 7)

Hayward Lake

Highway 7 (The Lougheed) follows the north bank of the Fraser River through the Fraser Valley. Just east of Port Moody, Highway 7A (Barnet Highway which was Hastings Street) ends and only Highway 7 continues, winding past Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam on to Pitt River, Pitt Lake and Pitt Meadows.

Maple Ridge: First known as Port Haney. Maple Ridge is located 42km (26miles) east of Vancouver on Highway 7. Named after Thomas Haney, who settled here in 1876, the area's economic mainstay is forestry, dairy, fruit-processing plants, blueberry and cranberry farms.

Hwy 7

Haney House:
Built in 1878 for the Haney family, the home is located near the Fraser River and surrounded by an attractive garden.

St. John the Divine Anglican Church:
Located at Laity Street and River Drive, this is the oldest church in B.C. (1859).


From Maple Ridge you may visit the Malcolm Knapp Research Forest with walking and hiking trails. Near the research centre is Golden Ear Provincial Park. Continuing east on Highway 7 the road to Rolley Lake Provincial Park, Hayward Lake and Stave Lake Recreation area.

Mission:
Mission is located 26 km (16 miles) east of Maple Ridge. This is a rich agricultural area.

Museum and Archives of Mission:
Housed in an old Bank of Commerce building featuring historical artifacts and native hunting history, the museum is located at 33201 Second Avenue.

Harrison River

Continuing east on Highway 7 you will pass Cascade Falls Regional Park, Dewdney Nature Regional Park, Nicomen Island and Hemlock Valley Ski Area and Salmon Hatchery.

You will soon cross the Harrison River which feeds into Harrison Bay from Harrison Lake. The Harrison River is one of the larger tributaries of the Fraser.

Harrison Hot Springs:
Known as the health spa of Canada, Harrison Hot Springs town is a health and vacation resort with mineral springs and sandy beaches on Harrison Lake.

Harrison Lake:
In the 1850's the Lake was part of the gold-rush route that headed to the Cariboo. Good fishing, swimming and canoeing is found at the lake. Just beyond Harrison Hot Springs is Sasquatch Provincial Park.

Back on Highway 7, you will pass through Agassiz, the Fraser Delta and Seabird Island. 77km (48miles) further you will meet with Highway 1 (The Trans Canada). Turn north to Yale and the Fraser Canyon or south to Hope.
