Starfish
Charters
Port Hardy, Vancouver Island, BC
Welcome
to Starfish Charters, located at Port Hardy, on Vancouver Island,
British Columbia, Canada. Our location in Port Hardy is nestled
close to some of the best northwest coast island wilderness
and several island groups nearby offer refuge and adventure to the
marine enthusiast. And
the fishing is especially good as
this is a point of interception for migrating runs of salmon. The
Port Hardy area also boasts some spectacular halibut fishing.
Trying
to create long term memories out and away from the humdrum of our
busy urban lives seems like a wholesome objective. At Starfish Charters
we invite you to melt away all the troubles, cares and peeves of
the daily grind
and join us on an expedition (northwest coast
safari) and see what kind of fun we can get up to.
Salmon,
Halibut, & Red Snapper Sportfishing Charters
The salmon fishing from Port Hardy, on Vancouver Island, rivals
all the best west coast locations of British Columbia with many
'out of the weather' tracks to go to in the afternoon. 20 to 30
pound Chinook salmon are common all summer, with some weighing up
to 50 pound.
Fly
fishing silver Coho salmon has really turned on here; we know several
tricks to encourage these fish to surface for a Chromy Bucktail.
Halibut
fishing is one of the most popular and exciting fisheries. For those
who haven't caught a halibut, this fishery is, to some, the most
thrilling. Halibut can reach over 300lb, and you never know when
your lucky day might come. The added bonus when halibut fishing
is that there are many different types of fish that you may encounter,
creating a big and varied catch at the end of the day.
Red
Snapper fishing is another of our favourite charter fishing trips.
Red Snapper are actually properly called Yellow Eye Rockfish. Rockfish
are a varied and plentiful fish on the Port Hardy/Pacific Northwest
coasts, and they are one of the loveliest is the Yellow Eye or Red
Snapper. The
Red Snapper's body is bright orange and its eyes are large and gold.
These fish run about 30lb and make an excellent table fish, roasted
with light spice and tomato or sundried tomato.
And,
be sure to bring your cameras - you'll be filming more than just
the big one!
Whale
Watching and Bear Watching and Wildlife Viewing
At Starfish Charter, along with Salmon, Halibut, and Red Snapper
sportfishing charters we offer Whale Watching, Bear Watching and
Wildlife Viewing. People come to see the Black bears, Grizzly bears,
Killer Whales, sea lions and sea otters, Peregrine Falcons and Bald
Eagles, as well as the many seabirds. You may also tour displays
of west coast native art and culture during your stay with us in
Port Hardy.
Wildlife
viewing in Port Hardy will allow you a chance to get close to some
of the amazing and endangered species of the Pacific Northwest.
Big Black bears are on the beaches in May, June and early July,
but the best place to see Black Bears is the last 30 km into Port
Hardy on the road side, as they eat clover and winter rye. Grizzly
bears are over on the mainland shore in Smith Inlet, Seymour and
Knight Inlet. Speaking of Knight Inlet - Glendale Cove has viewing
platforms above the saltwater marsh for just that purpose - wildlife
viewing of Grizzly bears.
Guided
Wilderness Camping
Your expedition with us can also include Guided Wilderness Camping
on and around the boat. Our guided BC wilderness camping is for
the more intrepid camper/ hiker
and the outer islands of northwest
Vancouver Island, and the Vancouver Island shore, are some of the
most breathtaking in natural beauty. Sand and gravel beaches lead
to a fringe of windswept spruce and cedar forest.
