Explore
History:
Visit some of the many gold mining
sites. Gold mining in the 1860's opened up this area. In the
first half of the Twentieth Century, the Bullion Pit Mine
was one of North America's largest hydraulic gold mines. A
small gold rush settlement, originally known as "Quesnel
Dam", turned into the small, friendly community of Likely.
It was renamed in honour of John A. Likely, who was connected
with the Bullion Pit Mine. Try your own luck at gold panning
and you might stumble onto a placer mine operating in the
area.
Take a trip to Barkerville Historic
Town and enjoy re-living the past. Visit the old mining ghost
town of Quesnel Forks.
Exceptional
Trout Fishing:
Spend the day fishing on one
of the many prolific fishing lakes or just soak in the natural
beauty of the area.
Morehead
Lake:
Morehead Lake was created in
the 1890's as one of the water supplies for the Bullion Pit
Mine. According to some sources, the name "Morehead"
came from the mining term "more head", others say
it came from a miner by the name of William Morehead, who
lived near the mouth of Morehead Creek (the creek was named
after him). It is a very scenic lake and the rainbows vary
from pan size to about 35 cm in length.
The hill in the background is
Polley Mountain with Mount Polley Mine. Bootjack Lake flanks
it on one side and Polley Lake on the other side, two of the
areas most popular fishing lakes.
Great accommodations in cabins
for hunters, working crews. We are the closest accommodations
to Mount Polley Mine. We house large groups.
Relaxing:
If taking it easy and getting
in touch with nature is on your agenda, Morehead Lake is the
place for you. Just sit outside the cabin and relax taking
in the scenery and tranquility. You might see a bald eagle
or osprey soar above and dive down into the lake to catch
a fish, a blue heron glide over the water or listen to a grouse
flapping its wings or the intriguing call of a loon. The abundant
wildlife in the area includes black bear, moose, deer, coyote,
lynx, beaver, loon, bald eagle, osprey, blue heron, humming
bird and more.
